Short answer: you don’t have to figure this out. I book the whole day, start to finish, and whatever that adds up to is what it adds up to. No clock-watching, no upsell for an extra hour when your reception runs long. It’s a milestones-not-minutes way of doing this.

That’s not how most photographers work, so it’s worth explaining why.

The industry standard is hourly packages: pick a block of hours, months out, before you know if your ceremony runs late, if the caterer falls behind, or if your grandmother insists on one more round of formals. Guess low and you’re negotiating overage fees mid-reception, or losing your grand exit. Guess high and you paid for hours nobody used.

I skip that entirely. I show up when your day starts and I’m there through the moments that matter, whatever time that turns out to be. If your timeline shifts the week of, or the day of, that’s not your problem to solve. It’s mine.

That said, it still helps me to know your rough timeline early, not because I’m counting hours, but because it tells me what to plan for. A few things worth mentioning when we talk:

Gaps in your schedule. A long gap between ceremony and reception, common with Catholic ceremonies around here, changes how I use that time. Good to know in advance.

Getting ready in two locations. Doesn’t cost you anything extra, but it does mean I need to know where both of you are.

A long reception with a lot of traditions. Cake cutting, bouquet toss, garter toss, sparkler exit. None of it requires you to negotiate for more coverage. I’m already there.

If you’re comparing photographers and everyone else is asking you to guess a number, that’s a good moment to ask what happens if you guess wrong. For my clients, that question doesn’t come up.

Curious what’s actually included? The current pricing page breaks down the commission and the optional upgrades, no guessing required there either.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book a specific number of hours for my wedding?

No. Coverage runs the whole day, start to finish, so there’s no hour count to guess at ahead of time.

What happens if my wedding day timeline changes?

Nothing changes on your end. Coverage follows the actual day, not a fixed schedule you locked in months earlier.

Does a longer reception cost extra?

No. Traditions like the cake cutting, bouquet toss, or a sparkler exit are already covered as part of the day.

Still thinking? That's what the consultation is for.

Every MDKauffmann commission starts with a conversation — not a sales pitch. We talk about your day, your priorities, and what "forever" looks like for your family. If we're the right fit, you'll know. If we're not, I'll tell you honestly.
